They use the contrast of color intensity to guide perception, anchoring the viewer in a fixed position to achieve a sense of depth as if breaking through the wall, essentially an outward extension of physical space. In contrast, Chinese painting evolved from the flat arrangement of the Western Han Dynasty to the scattered perspective of the Song and Yuan Dynasties, with a mobile viewpoint. It does not pursue a three-dimensional illusion but guides the viewer’s gaze to “wander” along the rhythm of the lines and brushstrokes, achieving a psychological exploration from the “scene outside the window” to the “realm within the heart”.

The second difference in viewing purpose: from “compensation in the present life” to “spiritual refuge”
The frescoes in the VillaRivia were intended to provide sensory comfort in the present life. The simulation of a cool garden in the enclosed underground dining room was a recreation of the natural order based on the artisans’ life experiences. In contrast, the paintings of the Western Han Dynasty carried a transcendent mission, serving as a medium for communication between heaven and man, with the core being the warding off of evil and the attainment of immortality. This function was internalized in the Song and Yuan Dynasties as the “leisurely wandering” of scholars. Paintings no longer served for sensory enjoyment but became a spiritual refuge for scholars to place their souls after their desk work.

The core of this difference lies in the distinct perceptions of artistic value between Chinese and Western cultures. The West emphasizes the reenactment of worldly experiences, while China focuses on the spiritual settlement. Both have their own merits. This also serves as a reminder to contemporary art: its vitality does not lie in replicating external images, but in constructing a visual world and responding to the fundamental questions of life.

The tea for today is all gone. Next time, I’ll brew a fresh pot and enjoy art with you again.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[8

post-8589","post","type-post","status-publish","format-video","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-mr-shan","post_format-post-format-video","entry","has-media
["GET
