To think of parting at the sight of a waning moon, or to sigh over fleeting time amid falling blossoms is not mere sentimentality; it is aesthetic imagination at work.

Aesthetic imagination refers to the psychological capacity of the aesthetic subject, driven by emotion, to disassemble, reorganise and recreate mnemonic representations, generating fresh aesthetic imagery. Rooted in prior perceptual experience, it revolves around concrete forms and remains unbound by practical utility or rigid logic. Emotion fuels and permeates the entire process, so it follows emotional logic rather than purely rational logic.

It manifests in two forms. The first, reproductive imagination, frequently emerges in appreciation: readers conjure scenes in the mind from written text, while audiences perceive static forms as living presences. The second, creative imagination, lies at the heart of artistic creation. Detached from tangible objects before one’s eyes, it fuses existing representations into entirely new forms. The two often intertwine, with creation within reproduction and reproduction within creation.

Aesthetic imagination is not unbridled fabrication. It is guided by inherent laws and constrained by the subject’s experience, cultivation and aesthetic ideals. That a thousand readers conceive a thousand versions of “Hamlet” arises precisely from the interplay of subjectivity and constraint.

Aesthetic imagination serves as a bridge leading from finitude to infinity. It allows people to feel mountains and rivers within a wash of ink, behold clouds and streams in a rugged stone, and reach the depths of aesthetics amid ordinary moments of life.
