If aesthetic taste stems from innate talent, does it follow that those without natural gifts have no need for aesthetics?

Many people attribute the entirety of one’s aesthetic level to natural endowment, asserting that aesthetic capacity cannot be improved without inborn talent. This view greatly oversimplifies the nature of aesthetics.

Innate perception and sensory acuity constitute one’s aesthetic gifts, yet they are far from everything. Those blessed with talent yet neglect deliberate refinement will inevitably fade away just like the child prodigy Fang Zhongyong; those devoid of natural flair and who let their sensibilities drift aimlessly will see their aesthetic standards sink without bound. Fundamentally, aesthetics is the outward manifestation of self-awareness. Its value resides inward: it is the manner in which humans forge meaning beyond mere survival, and reach for the infinite within the bounds of finitude.

Diligence acquired over one’s lifetime may never reach the upper limit set by natural talent, yet it always serves as the indispensable threshold for entry into the realm of aesthetics. Aesthetic appreciation unites sensory intuition and rational comprehension: every human being possesses aesthetic sensibility, differing merely in degree; everyone holds thoughts, varying only in depth of dimension. One need not attribute all aesthetic merit or deficiency to talent. Even without exceptional natural gifts, aesthetic judgment can still be systematically cultivated. Two practical approaches may be adopted: first, immerse yourself in universally acknowledged canonical artworks to establish a steady benchmark for aesthetic reference; second, consciously review your daily aesthetic decisions, refining your discernment and accuracy through continual comparison and adjustment.

Talent may set the ceiling for one’s aesthetic attainment, yet it must never be an excuse to neglect one’s aesthetic baseline. To nurture aesthetic taste is essentially to take initiative in honing how you perceive the world—a lifelong journey of inner spiritual growth.
