「A bit of artistic insight」Sophisticated Aesthetic Lies in Subtraction
Why does refined aesthetic judgment always come down to subtraction?
People’s initial understanding of beauty leans toward addition. Ornate details, layered elements and bold colours create sensational stimulation. A high density of visual information readily brings a superficial sense of abundance. Yet the advancement of aesthetic cultivation starts with figuring out what ought to be discarded.
Subtraction on the formal level manifests as Minimalism. It does not equal emptiness or crudeness. After stripping away superfluous components, every remaining form, material and proportion becomes deliberate and restrained. Such command over selection demands far greater mastery than unrestrained embellishment.
Subtraction at its core corresponds to Suprematism. It frees beauty from reliance on external symbolism and returns artwork to its intrinsic value. Kazimir Malevich’s Suprematism reduced painting to geometric blocks of colour and basic compositional structures, casting off figurative restraints in pursuit of pure artistic sensation. In his later years, Henri Matisse set aside paintbrushes and turned to cut-paper collages. The interplay of hues and formal tension alone delivers complete aesthetic power.
Subtraction on the perceptual level manifests itself as negative space. Artists hold back excessive self-expression to leave ample room for viewers’ imagination. Empty space can evoke rivers, sky, mist and snow, with under-toned backgrounds allowing emotions to flow freely. Most people mistakenly equate fullness with fulfilment. On the contrary, over-loaded beauty imposes meaning one-sidedly, whereas beauty with negative-space achieves mutual resonance. When simplicity reaches its peak, the human mind attains serene clarity.
Aesthetic subtraction is essentially the outward projection of one’s inner order. Trimming elements across form, core meaning and perception equals shedding excess and returning to your authentic self. To eliminate clutter and embrace primal simplicity marks the highest realm of aesthetic pursuit.
That’s all for today’s art – appreciation session. Next time, we’ll make a new pot of tea and continue exploring the world of art together.
