「One object per period」Scholar’s Rock Appreciation as Self-Reflection: Reflections of Life Within Vital Resonance
Why have literati across dynasties kept rugged stones close day and night, treating them as bosom friends? The answer lies not in exotic shapes or striking hues, but in vital resonance.
Within vital resonance, Qi stands for intrinsic vitality and energy, the spiritual temperament forged and consolidated over hundreds of millions of years of geological evolution. It may appear ancient and profound, serene and tranquil, or dignified and upright — the fundamental nature of the stone.
Resonance is the outward flow and manifestation of Qi. It is the rhythmic aura conveyed collectively by the stone’s form, texture and posture: sharp and refined, solemn and poised, or fluid and graceful. As Zong Baihua remarked on painting: “Vital resonance is the rhythm and harmony of the Qi that animates all things in the universe.” He regarded “Vital Resonance Animates All Things” as the supreme realm of painting. This core aesthetic principle equally applies to scholar’s rocks. A stone’s resonance resembles a silent melody, generating harmonious rhythm from abundant Qi within.
Vital resonance differs from artistic conception. Artistic conception originates from the viewer’s imagination and projection triggered by the stone, a creation of the mind. Vital resonance, by contrast, is the inherent life force embedded within the stone itself. It is the natural charisma emanating from the integration of form and texture, determining the artistic calibre of a scholar’s rock.
To perceive vital resonance through scholar’s rocks is ultimately to reflect upon oneself and examine the inner heart. A stone consolidates Qi to establish its texture; a human nurtures Qi to anchor their character. A stone unfolds resonance to shape its bearing; a person cultivates grace to build their stature. Within a single rugged stone, we observe the vital rhythm of nature, and pursue our own state of animated vital resonance.
There is a vast world to explore within the realm of collecting. That is all for today’s chat—until next time!
