A bit of artistic insight |Artistic Value Is a Spiritual Dialogue Between People
Is the artistic value “expression” or “understanding”?
Expression is the foundation of artistic value. Through various mediums, artists transform their personal thoughts into perceptible works. The creative mindset and artistic exploration contained within these works naturally confer them a unique value, which cannot be replaced by any interpretation.
Understanding is an extension of artistic value. Viewers interpret the works based on their own experiences and knowledge, and their opinions naturally vary greatly: for the same work, some see a child leaping, while others understand it as a metaphor of an adult falling into an abyss. These diverse perspectives are not misinterpretations; instead, they give new dimensions to the work, allowing the potential value hidden within the expression to be gradually discovered and continuously expanded.
Expression and understanding are an inseparable interaction. Without understanding, expression becomes aimless; without expression, understanding is merely self-talk in a whisper. Therefore, artistic value cannot exist without the “arrow” of expression, nor can it do without the “target” of understanding. Expression and understanding are not mutually exclusive; only when the two work together can an entire artistic value be formed.
