「The Art of Collecting」Five Dimensions of Art Evaluation

Beauty has no standard answer, but there are standards for selecting beautiful artworks in art collecting!

Five Dimensions to Clarify the Criteria for Collecting and Selecting Beauty
The first dimension, visual aesthetics, evaluates whether a work possesses a distinctive artistic style and strong recognizability through the overall presentation of visual elements such as color, lines, and composition.

The second dimension, creative technique, evaluates the creator’s proficiency in various techniques and their ability to shape form, light and shadow, and texture, assessing whether the work effectively and accurately conveys the creator’s thoughts and emotions.

The third dimension, historic culture, examines whether a work reflects the spirit of its era, incorporates diverse cultural and intellectual elements, and has evolved into a distinctive cultural value through integration with its creative context.

The fourth dimension, artistic innovation, focuses on whether a work breaks away from tradition in its creative concept, explores new forms of expression and materials, thereby creating greater possibilities for artistic expression.

The fifth dimension, emotional communication: high-quality artworks often possess strong empathetic power, capable of touching hearts and evoking resonance among viewers. Individual differences in perception belong solely to the realm of subjective aesthetics and do not affect the objective artistic value of the work itself.

In my view, all art collections—whether objects or paintings—should ideally begin with functionality and practical use. Only when a piece is integrated into daily life and put to actual use can its artistic and collecting value truly take root and endure over time.

Collecting holds a world of secrets. That’s all for today. We’ll continue next time.
