「One object per period」Scholar’s Rock Appreciation: Ultimately a Contemplation of One’s Inner Mind

When Chinese people speak of “artistic conception”, calligraphy embodies it within brushwork and blank space, while landscape painting manifests it amid mountains, valleys, mist and clouds. These aesthetics share the same origin and logic, and the artistic conception of scholar’s rock appreciation follows suit.

A rock is born of heaven and earth. Its veins, contours and cavities are naturally formed form and texture. Yet artistic conception is never confined to a rock’s physical presence. It is an alternate spiritual realm unfolded through the viewer’s association and imagination. Observers project their life experience, knowledge and sentiments onto the stone: layered veins may turn into rolling mountains and rivers, delicate cavities may evoke mist winds through pines, and solitary steep silhouettes may symbolise the integrity of a noble scholar.

“Who knows a fragment of stone bears such deep affection; it once escorted Tao Yuanming into a land of serene intoxication.” Tao Yuanming entrusted his pastoral aspirations to the “Sober Stone”, which perfectly illustrates how ancient scholars forged spiritual realms through stones. The stone itself holds no sentiment; meaning arises from the human beholder. Faced with the very same rock, one may perceive pastoral tranquility, another the vicissitudes of the world, and yet another the quiet serenity of Chan. As the saying goes, benevolent people perceive benevolence, and the wise perceive wisdom. No fixed interpretation exists for aesthetics; all is grasped through inner intuition.

A silent stone functions like a clear mirror, reflecting each person’s unique spiritual temperament and outlook on life. The charm of admiring scholar’s rocks lies not merely in visible beauty. When gazing upon a stone, one can step away from worldly commotion, turn inward to examine the true self, and deepen understanding of life through quiet reflection. Within a modest rugged stone, one unfolds a spiritual realm all of one’s own.

There is a vast world to explore within the realm of collecting. That is all for today’s chat—until next time!
