「A bit of artistic insight」Aesthetic Sensibility: A Higher-Dimension Cognition & a Scarce Faculty
Aesthetic sensibility is intelligence elevated to a higher plane, as well as the most precious capacity a person can possess.
It is never a contest over the volume of accumulated knowledge, but an integrated cognitive capacity encompassing perception, screening, synthesis and transformation. Faced with the very same object, some merely perceive superficial liveliness, while others discern the underlying texture and inherent logic; some drift along swept up by chaotic streams of information, whereas others distill only what truly suits themselves from the clutter. This power of judgment that pierces superficial appearances serves as a direct marker of one’s cognitive tier.
The preciousness of aesthetic taste bears no relation to lavish spending and material accumulation. One may replicate artifacts and copy stylistic tropes, yet never duplicate the life experience and contemplation accumulated beneath them. There exist no shortcuts to cultivating aesthetics: all external information and experiences must undergo personal screening, deconstruction, reconstruction, gradual accumulation and internalization, before they solidify into one’s exclusive artistic vision and aesthetic judgment. This process is mentally taxing, prolonged, impossible to rush, and cannot be undertaken by anyone else — this is its genuine cost.
The cultivation of aesthetic taste is inherently a journey of self-discovery. Through repeated choices and abandonments, you define your artistic leanings; via constant adjustment and accumulation, you build your inner aesthetic framework. When you cease to be dictated by external norms and live with steadfast inner coherence, this poised way of being stands as the supreme form of aesthetic expression.
That’s all for today’s art – appreciation session. Next time, we’ll make a new pot of tea and continue exploring the world of art together.
