「Look at the Picture and Talk about the Painting」Futurism: Dynamic Aesthetics Under Industry

A dog with countless legs! This artwork, “Dynamism of a Dog on a Leash” by Giacomo Balla, clearly and directly illustrates what Futurism is. While Cubism breaks down objects and freezes them in static moments, Futurism adds the dimension of time, merging an entire sequence of continuous motion into a single image. Simply put, Futurism is Cubism in motion. If you’d like to learn more about Cubism, check out my previous episode.

The essence of Futurism lies in one words: “dynamic.” It passionately celebrates industrial civilization and machinery, favoring the sense of power brought by speed, aiming to capture through painting the urgent and vibrant rhythm of modern life. Giacomo Balla excels at capturing dynamic scenes from everyday life, effortlessly recreating vivid moments of motion with repeated lines and overlapping afterimages. Umberto Boccioni, on the other hand, adopts a more rugged style, skillfully using fragmented geometric forms to emphasize the fusion of matter and movement, creating a strong industrial aesthetic. Whether in paintings or sculptures, he interprets the unique beauty that arises from the combination of mechanical aesthetics and dynamism.

Although this movement existed for a short time and carried certain limitations of its era, it boldly broke free from the constraints of traditional art, formally introducing speed and industry into the realm of art, and thus opened up entirely new creative avenues for modern art.
