「Look at the Picture and Talk about the Painting」Love is the Only Underlying Color
“If only one color could exist on life’s palette, providing all meaning to both life and art, that color would be love.” Even Picasso once remarked that after Matisse’s death, Chagall was the only artist who truly understood color.
Marc Chagall’s paintings are romantic and dreamlike, depicting lovers gracefully entwined, flowers blooming freely, and vibrant colors that always dispel gloom. The weightless floating sensation in “Birthday” resembles the dizzying sweetness of love. In “Bella With White Collar”, the beloved is captured in a serene and dignified pose, transforming affection and sanctity, motherhood and rebirth into a spiritual solace deep within the heart.
After his beloved departed, he took up his pen to record his longing. In “Moonbouquets and white calla lilies”, the images gaze across distances—Bella hidden among the full moon, expressing a love that transcends life and death yet never truly parts. In “Lovers on a Yellow Background”, their embracing figures against a warm yellow hue evoke tender memories of a lifetime spent together. His late work, “Inspiration”, depicts a dream in which he reunites with Bella, with angels and birds bearing witness, whispering an endless devotion.
Time may quietly pass, but separation cannot sever deep affection. The enduring love depicted by Chagall is also the most touching romance in this world. May20th(520), may you both forever shine brightly and remain vivid in each other’s worlds.
The tea for today is all gone. Next time, I’ll brew a fresh pot and enjoy art with you again.
