A bit of artistic insight | From Qiu Zhijie, we see the loss of the essence of art
True art has no boundaries.
Qiu Zhijie’s so-called “cultural aggression” conspiracy theory is merely distorting the essence of artistic resonance through a narrow lens.
The powerful tremor that touches the heart is the most fundamental criterion for evaluating art.It should be the symbiosis of the core of Eastern spirit and the tension of Western expression, just as the Eastern abstract theory proposed by Gao Minglu suggests. The contemporary expression that grows from the traditional roots should possess both the transparency of the East and the sharpness of the West.Calligraphy practice is the self-reflection in the brush and ink, and it is also the immediate manifestation of the creator’s psychological state.
Qiu Zhijie’s “marketplace calligraphy” is a social art practice, but its writing performance has no discernible pattern. It is merely a farce of alienating the brush and ink into a promotional gimmick, similar to Zeng Xiang’s “shouting calligraphy”. The former is an artist with a nominal position in the art academy, using the guise of being “down-to-earth” to become a laughingstock in the circle; the latter, under the banner of “contemporary art”, regards shouting calligraphy as a form of contemporary art expression. But what is the relationship between the “shouting” he chose and calligraphy? It seems to be a selective mistake, or perhaps due to the animal instinctual “shouting” for mate competition and defense against external invasion. Both aim to gain symbolic power in the contemporary art field through this particularity.
True art is not an appendage of ideology, nor is it for show and gain! It should be a symbiosis of Eastern and Western wisdom, inheriting the transparency of the East and responding to the depth of the West’s “logical thinking”. Qiu Zhijie’s narrow-mindedness and shortsightedness are merely using political filters and utilitarian shackles to lock art into a self-constructed prison.
Those in positions of power and with influence should avoid being blinded by prejudice and driven by utilitarianism!
The tea for today is all gone. Next time, I’ll brew a fresh pot and enjoy art with you again.
